UPDATE: needles inserted "after" packaging

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning people to check their food after more cases of food tampering surfaced in Toronto. Toronto Police say there are two new reports of people finding needles in Piller's sausages -- in this case Kielbasa and Turkey Kielbasa in a localized area of West Toronto.

Police were looking into three earlier reports that needles were found in Piller's Polish Sausage.

The food agency says people should check all food products thoroughly for signs of tampering.

As for Piller's, they maintain that they are "...currently working closely and cooperating fully with the Toronto Police Service and our customers to insure the safety of the public on this tampering issue."

All Piller's facilities are CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) registered establishments and are monitored by the CFIA. An important part of this federal monitoring programme is the metal detection capabilities of our production facilities. All Piller's processing facilities and packaging lines are equipped with metal detection devices and are monitored and validated several times a day during production. The needles in question are definitely detectable by our metal detection programme. This means that the objects were inserted after packaging. This has been verified by CFIA.

These products are distributed nationally to thousands of locations across Canada. The products that were tampered with were purchased in a localized area of West Toronto.

The public is requested to check their packaging of Piller’s Polish sausages, Piller's Kolbassa and Piller's Turkey Kolbassa thoroughly to see if there is any evidence of tampering. If you have reason to suspect that the product has been tampered with you should retain the product, the packaging, retain your receipt and call your local police or the Canadian Food inspection Agency at 416-665-5049.
