Dr. Barbara Yaffe was cited as saying that Toronto's health agency is investigating an outbreak of E. coli after six cases were confirmed after a Canada Day picnic, and that four people were hospitalized, including one with severe kidney complications, following the picnic for a Sri Lankan student group attended by hundreds.
Yaffe was further cited as saying that summer E. coli cases are often associated with picnics and barbecuing, and this outbreak reinforces the importance of safe food handling.
