Making food safe without using chemicals

timesofmalta.com April 8, 2018

A project coordinated by the University of Malta called Suit4food is teaching students how to use technologies such as high water pressure, cold atmospheric plasma, ultraviolet light and ultrasound instead of chemical treatments to make food safe, resulting in less waste and negative environmental impact.

As part of the project a group of PhD and Master’s students from Malta, Germany, Sweden, Greece and Spain recently held a training session led by experts in food safety and processing at The Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy in Potsdam, Germany. The training combined theory with practice on the best ways to lower risk of catching a food-borne disease using such clean technology that makes food safe without compromising on its taste.

The project is led by the University of Malta in partnership with institutions around Europe and is being funded by the EU Erasmusplus programme.
